Trey Yesavage pitched 6 2/3 strong innings Monday night and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting New York Mets 2-1.
Yesavage (4-3) allowed one run, three hits and no walks with a hit batter and three strikeouts.
Louis Varland pitched around an infield hit and a walk in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his 17th save.
Toronto snapped a six-game losing streak and is 2-6 so far on a 10-game homestand.
Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run for the Mets, who have lost nine of 10.
Yesavage pitched around Juan Soto’s one-out double in the first. Soto reached third on a deep fly to center by former Blue Jay Bo Bichette, who received a loud ovation when he came to bat.
The Blue Jays had allowed a first-inning run in the seven previous games.
Toronto took a 1-0 lead in the home first against Sean Manaea (1-3) when George Springer circled the bases on a series of comical misplays. Soto let Springer’s liner to left bounce past him and center fielder A.J. Ewing botched his attempt to back up the play. Soto eventually retrieved the ball. Springer charitably was given a triple with Ewing’s error allowing him to score.
Manaea retired eight batters in a row before Luis Urias led off the home fifth with a double to left. He took third on a groundout before Myles Straw hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Manaea was again betrayed by his defense when Lindor fumbled Kazuma Okamoto’s routine two-out grounder to shortstop. Ernie Clement walked and Austin Warren replaced Manaea. Warren allowed a walk to load the bases before ending the threat with a strikeout of Urias.
Manaea allowed two runs, three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Lindor led off the seventh by lining a homer to right on a 1-0 fastball. Ewing was hit by a 3-1 pitch with one out. After a flyout, Mason Fluharty replaced Yesavage and Ewing was caught stealing to end the inning.
Francisco Alvarez doubled to center against Toronto’s Tyler Rogers with one out in the eighth. Soto was walked intentionally with two out and Bichette grounded out to the pitcher.
