Bobby Witt Jr. smacked a tiebreaking three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning and the Kansas City Royals stretched their winning streak to a season-best four games with a 4-1 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night at West Sacramento, Calif.

Salvador Perez also homered for Kansas City, which has won five of six contests following an eight-game skid. Maikel Garcia and Perez each had two hits in the opener of a three-game series.

Jacob Wilson had an RBI single and Shea Langeliers had three hits for the Athletics, who left 14 runners on base.

Nick Mears (2-1) worked a perfect ninth and Lucas Erceg walked Carlos Cortes with two out in the 10th before Zack Gelof reached on an infield hit to load the bases.

Erceg then retired Darell Hernaiz on a soft liner to second to post his seventh save for Kansas City.

The Royals had runners on first and second with none out in the 10th against Justin Sterner (1-3) before Garcia popped up a bunt that Langeliers caught in foul territory. Witt then came up and hit the second pitch to right center and the ball barely cleared the short wall for his second homer in two days. Witt didn't hit any in the team's first 27 games.

The Athletics lost Tyler Soderstrom to an apparent right shoulder injury after a dive for a fly ball in the fifth -- he initially stayed in -- and the Royals saw Vinnie Pasquantino exit with lower-back tightness after being hurt during his swing while grounding out in the sixth.

The Athletics' Aaron Civale didn't allow a run in five scoreless innings while giving up five hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Kansas City's Kris Bubic gave up one run and four hits in five-plus innings. He struck out six and walked four and departed after hitting Cortes with a pitch to start the sixth.

The A's took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gelof reached on an infield hit and scored from second on Wilson's two-out single to center.

Perez tied the score with one out in the sixth when he jumped on a 2-2 fastball and ripped a 425-foot blast to center off Hogan Harris. The nine-time All Star has homered twice in his last three games.

Perez nearly had a homer in the fourth but he didn't have enough elevation on a liner that smacked against the left field wall. He was held to a single by Soderstrom.

Nico Hoerner's two-run double snapped a sixth-inning tie and Pete Crow-Armstrong broke open the game with a three-run homer Tuesday night as the visiting Chicago Cubs stopped the San Diego Padres 8-3.

The game was tied 2-2 when Hoerner lined his two-bagger into right-center field, scoring Nicky Lopez and Crow-Armstrong. Both runs were charged to reliever Kyle Hart (0-1), who issued a pair of walks before being lifted for David Morgan.

After San Diego pulled within 4-3 in its half of the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Luis Campusano, Chicago blew it open with four runs in the seventh, all with two outs. Pinch hitter Alex Bregman poked a run-scoring single to right before Crow-Armstrong unloaded his second homer of the year over the center field wall.

Edward Cabrera (3-0) earned the win after lasting 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs off six hits and a walk while striking out seven. Padres starter Walker Buehler pitched 4 2/3 innings, yielding three hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

Buehler got himself into second-inning trouble by issuing consecutive walks to Ian Happ and Michael Busch. Dansby Swanson, who left after the half-inning with a left glute cramp, cashed them in with a two-run double to the wall in left-center.

San Diego pulled a run back in its half of the second when Xander Bogaerts jacked his fifth homer of the year just inside the left field foul pole. The Padres tied the game in the fourth via Ty France's RBI single that scored Bogaerts, who walked and stole second.

But the Padres simply couldn't hold off the Cubs' attack. Chicago finished with eight hits and got help from San Diego pitchers, who combined to walk six, toss three wild pitches and hit two. Bregman and Seiya Suzuki each collected two hits.

Padres manager Craig Stammen left the dugout in the eighth inning to catch a flight in order to attend a funeral. Bench coach Randy Knorr ran the team for the game's remainder and will act as the manager for Wednesday's series finale.

De'Aaron Fox scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as the host San Antonio Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 114-95 on Tuesday to close out a 4-1 victory in the teams' first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Victor Wembanyama racked up 17 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots as the second-seeded Spurs secured a berth in the conference semifinals vs. either third-seeded Denver Nuggets or sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves. It is San Antonio's first trip to the second round of the playoffs since the 2016-17 season.

San Antonio was in cruise control from the opening minutes and led by 28 points in the first half, by 20 at halftime and by 21 points after three quarters.

The Trail Blazers pulled within 97-88 on a three-point play by Jrue Holiday with 5:46 to play but never made a serious run the rest of the way as Fox made big play after big play to help San Antonio close out the victory.

Julian Champagnie added 19 points for the Spurs, with Dylan Harper scoring 17, Stephon Castle hitting for 15 before fouling out with 4:36 remaining and Devin Vassell tallying 10 points. Fox dished out a game-high nine assists.

Deni Avdija's 22 points paced Portland. Jerami Grant added 12, Robert Williams III and Sidy Cissoko scored 11 points each, and Donovan Clingan hit for 10.

Champagnie hit three 3-pointers, and had his toe on the line for a fourth, while scoring 11 points in the first quarter and helping the Spurs to a 36-24 advantage after 12 minutes of action.

San Antonio poured in on the second period, pushing its lead to 54-28 after a Wembanyama 3-pointer at the 6:45 mark. The Trail Blazers reeled off nine straight points capped by a dunk from Clingan to cull the margin to 17, but San Antonio swung back, with a three-point play by Luke Kornet highlighting a 12-2 run that built the lead to 65-37.

The Spurs were up 65-45 at the break even though Wembanyama took just three shots (and made them all) while scoring seven first-half points. Champagnie led the way with 14 points and Fox dished out seven assists in a first half that San Antonio outshot the Trail Blazers 66.7% to 36.5%.

Avdija's 16 points led all scorers before halftime.

Cam Schlittler pitched six stellar innings to best Jacob deGrom and Aaron Judge homered for the third straight game as the visiting New York Yankees hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas.

The Yankees won for the 10th time in 11 games and Schlittler (4-1) turned in their 11th scoreless outing by a starting pitcher through their first 30 games. Schlittler allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked two.

It is Schlittler's fourth start without allowing an earned run. He ended the night with 49 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings. He threw 64 of 92 pitches for strikes and struck out Corey Seager twice a night after Max Fried fanned the shortstop three times in Monday's 4-2 win.

The Yankees mustered a run on three hits in six innings against deGrom (2-1). The two-time Cy Young award winner struck out five and walked none as Texas lost for the first time in his six starts this season.

Cody Bellinger hit an RBI double in the first inning off the top of the right-center field fence after Judge had a two-strike single. Bellinger also made a nice catch at the warning track in left field on Brandon Nimmo in the first.

Austin Wells added a homer in the seventh off Jalen Beeks to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Judge hit a 424-foot shot into the second deck in left field in the ninth off Cole Winn and tied Chicago White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami for the major league lead with 12.

Schlittler did not encounter any significant trouble until the sixth. After Nimmo singled and Josh Jung walked on four pitches, Schlittler struck out Seager on three pitches before retiring Joc Pederson and Jake Burger.

Brent Headrick stranded two in the seventh by fanning Nimmo, and Fernando Cruz stranded two in the eighth. Cruz made a backhanded catch Joc Pederson's bunt groundout before using his splitter for strikeouts of Burger and pinch hitter Ezequiel Duran.

David Bednar allowed an RBI triple to Danny Jansen in the ninth when center fielder Trent Grisham slammed into the fence and an RBI single to Jung. Bednar secured his ninth save, however, by getting Seager to bounce into a double play to end the game.

Jalen Brunson scored 39 points to lift the host New York Knicks to a 126-97 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference first-round series.

New York holds a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Knicks will look to advance to the conference semifinals on Thursday when they play Game 6 in Atlanta.

Brunson made 15 of 23 shots from the floor and added eight assists against one turnover for New York, which shot a robust 57% from the field.

OG Anunoby contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who held a decisive 48-27 edge on the boards and a 60-42 advantage in points in the paint.

New York's Karl-Anthony Towns collected 16 points, 14 rebounds and six assists on the heels of recording 20, 10 and 10, respectively, in the Knicks' 114-98 victory at Atlanta in Game 4 on Saturday.

Jose Alvarado added 12 points off the bench for the Knicks.

Atlanta's Jalen Johnson recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Dyson Daniels had 17 points and Onyeka Okongwu and Nickeil Alexander-Walker each had 16 for the Hawks, who shot 31% (13 of 42) from 3-point range and were limited to just four fastbreak points.

Atlanta's CJ McCollum continued to struggle after playing the role of hero in Games 2 and 3. He followed up his 17-point performance in Game 4 with just six points on 3-of-10 shooting from the floor on Tuesday.

Johnson's dunk pulled Atlanta within 23-20 before New York went on a 12-2 run to end the first quarter. The Hawks didn't do themselves any favors by making just 1 of 8 attempts from 3-point range in the opening period.

The Knicks extended their lead to 59-37 after Anunoby's steal led to Brunson's layup with 3:08 remaining in the second quarter. The Hawks, however, closed the quarter on an 11-5 run to get within 64-48 at halftime.

New York led by 18 points in the third quarter while giving Brunson and Towns a breather. Brunson, however, scored eight points during a 12-0 Knicks run during the fourth quarter that effectively ended any faint hopes Atlanta had for a comeback.
