The Dallas Mavericks announced on Monday that they have entered option agreements for the potential purchase of the former Valley View Mall as the new site for their arena and entertainment district.
The 104-acre site is located in North Dallas — 10 miles north of downtown — and was selected over the current City Hall location in downtown Dallas.
The Valley View Mall was demolished in 2023.
“We have the opportunity to create a vibrant mixed-use destination anchored by a state-of-the-art arena, along with restaurants, entertainment options, public green spaces and family-friendly experiences,” the team said in a statement. “Done thoughtfully and with community engagement, a project of this scale will serve as a meaningful economic catalyst for Dallas and its residents.”
The Mavericks share American Airlines Center with the NHL’s Dallas Stars. The Mavericks’ lease expires in July 2031 and franchise CEO Rick Welts wanted a final decision by this summer in order to have a new arena ready in time for the 2031-32 season.
The American Airlines Center is located in the Victory Park neighborhood of downtown Dallas. The Stars are considering whether to remain at their current location or move into the suburbs as well.
