Kyle Tucker went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs, and Reese McGuire hit a grand slam and also drove in five runs as the Chicago Cubs cruised to a 12-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif.
It was the eighth multi-homer game of Tucker’s career, three of which have come against the Angels, and his first with the Cubs. In all, he has 27 career homers against Los Angeles. Chicago finished with 14 hits and scored 10 or more runs in a game for the 18th time this season.
Rookie Cade Horton (8-4) picked up the win, allowing three hits over six shutout innings. Ben Brown allowed one run on two hits over the final three innings to pick up his first save.
Jo Adell homered and had two hits for Los Angeles. Victor Mederos (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on four hits in four innings.
Red Sox 12, Yankees 1
Garrett Crochet struck out 11 in seven innings, and the Red Sox easily extended their winning streak over the host Yankees to eight games in a rout.
Crochet (14-5) allowed only one run, Giancarlo Stanton’s 445th career homer, among five hits and improved to 10-1 over his past 14 outings. He finished with his sixth double-digit strikeout game this season.
Trevor Story continued to hit well against the Yankees this season by homering and driving in three runs. He finished with three hits and is batting .351 (13-for-37) against the Yankees this season.
Giants 7, Brewers 1
Casey Schmitt hit a three-run homer and doubled in a run as visiting San Francisco snapped a four-game losing skid and at the same time ended Milwaukee’s seven-game home winning streak.
Logan Webb (12-9) allowed one run on five hits over six innings for the Giants, who won for just the third time in their last 14 games. The MLB-leading Brewers went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Freddy Peralta battled control issues early and walked three of the first seven San Francisco batters he faced. He threw 85 pitches through four innings and was at 96 after five. He exited after allowing two hits and four walks, with six strikeouts over five scoreless innings.
Blue Jays 7, Marlins 6 (12 innings)
Bo Bichette went 4-for-6, including the go-ahead RBI single in the 12th inning, as Toronto defeated host Miami.
Bichette also made a pair of fielding gems at shortstop. In the seventh inning, his relay throw cut down a would-be run at the plate. In the 12th, Bichette’s throw to second on a fielder’s choice caught Otto Lopez — the automatic runner — off the bag, essentially sealing the Marlins’ fate. George Springer helped lead the Blue Jays’ offense, going 3-for-6 with a solo homer, a double and an RBI single.
Marlins third baseman Javier Sanoja had an impressive game. In his last three at-bats, he had an RBI double in the seventh; a game-tying RBI single in the ninth; and another game-tying RBI single in the 11th inning.
Mets 9, Braves 2
Mark Vientos and Jeff McNeil each hit two home runs — part of a six-homer night for New York — and the Mets outslugged host Atlanta to take the first two games of a three-game series.
New York homered three times in the seventh inning against reliever Dylan Lee to break the game open. Pete Alonso started the uprising with a two-run homer, his 29th. Vientos followed with a solo shot and Starling Marte added a solo homer.
Marte had a strong all-around game. He went 3-for-3 with a walk and threw out Nacho Alvarez Jr. at the plate from left field to complete a double play and end a Braves threat in the third inning. Mets leadoff batter Francisco Lindor was 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Astros 9, Orioles 8
Christian Walker’s two-run, tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning helped rescue Houston after the Astros squandered a big lead at Baltimore.
Walker has homered in each of the first three games of the series, helping put the Astros in position to sweep the four-game series going into Sunday afternoon. Carlos Correa, Jesus Sanchez and Victor Caratini all homered in a five-run first inning for Houston, which was shut out in three consecutive games earlier in the week. The Astros have scored 26 runs in three games of this series.
Jeremiah Jackson and Colton Cowser hit solo home runs for the Orioles, who answered the Astros’ five-run first with five runs in the first two innings.
Phillies 6, Nationals 4
Edmundo Sosa belted a three-run homer to cap a five-run fourth inning and Trea Turner added a solo shot an inning later, lifting host Philadelphia over Washington.
Aaron Nola (2-7) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in six innings in his second start since coming off a three-month stint on the injured list. J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm ripped back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth to fuel the Phillies’ fifth win in the last six games.
C.J. Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr. both homered in the sixth inning for the Nationals. Garcia banged out three hits, including another RBI double. Mitchell Parker (7-14) permitted six runs on six hits in five innings to fall to 0-4 in five starts in August.
Tigers 4, Royals 2
Spencer Torkelson and pinch hitter Andy Ibanez hit solo homers and host Detroit extended its winning streak to five games with a victory over Kansas City.
Jake Rogers had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers, while starter Chris Paddack (5-11) gave up one run on five hits in five innings. Will Vest got the last four outs for his 19th save.
Bobby Witt Jr. led the Royals offense with three hits, including a solo homer. Vinnie Pasquantino’s franchise-tying record of homering in five straight games was snapped, but he did have an RBI double. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha (8-10) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings.
Pirates 5, Rockies 1
Jared Triolo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to help host Pittsburgh beat Colorado. The Pirates, who have won three straight, have outscored the Rockies 14-1 over the first two games of the three-game set.
Pittsburgh starter Mike Burrows held Colorado scoreless on two hits and struck out five in four innings. Reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (3-7) fanned five straight in his two innings in the fifth and sixth to earn the win. Andrew McCutchen knocked a two-run homer to give the hosts an early lead, and Triolo mashed a fastball 404 feet over the wall in left-center to double the advantage to 4-0.
Kyle Freeland (3-13) gave up five runs on seven hits over five innings for the Rockies, who have lost four of five after a four-game winning streak. Brenton Doyle busted the shutout in the ninth inning when, with two outs, he belted a solo shot to center field off reliever Yohan Ramirez.
Rangers 10, Guardians 0
Cody Freeman, Josh Jung and Adolis Garcia hit home runs and starter Jack Leiter had his best outing of the season as Texas swamped Cleveland in the second of a three-game series.
Leiter (8-7) allowed just two hits — singles by Gabriel Arias and Kyle Manzardo in the third and fourth innings, respectively — and didn’t walk a batter while striking out 10. No Guardians batter reached second base until the ninth inning and the team finished with three hits.
Wyatt Langford, Jung and Freeman led the Rangers’ attack with two hits apiece.
White Sox 7, Twins 3
Colson Montgomery went 2-for-4 and belted his first career grand slam to help Chicago cruise past visiting Minnesota, giving the White Sox just their second win in their past nine games.
Luis Robert Jr. also homered, and Miguel Vargas went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the win. Chicago right-hander Davis Martin (5-9) allowed two runs on five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out six.
Kody Clemens, Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis each hit a solo homer for the Twins. Minnesota right-hander Mick Abel (2-3) gave up six runs on seven hits in three innings in his team debut. He walked two and struck out two.
Diamondbacks 10, Reds 1
Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Geraldo Perdomo and Blaze Alexander each homered to propel host Arizona in a rout of Cincinnati.
Gurriel and Perdomo both drove in three runs apiece, while Alexander went 3-for-4 for the Diamondbacks, who won their fourth straight game. After Jalen Beeks threw a clean first inning as the Arizona opener, Nabil Crismatt (1-0) hurled four scoreless innings, allowing four hits, while striking out four and walking three. Jake Woodford earned a four-inning save — his first of the year — allowing a run on three hits while striking out a batter.
Andrew Abbott (8-4) struggled for the Reds, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in four innings, striking out six and walking none. Austin Hays went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Cincinnati, which lost its third straight game and fell 2 1/2 games behind the New York Mets for the final National League wild-card spot.
Padres 5, Dodgers 1
Nestor Cortes allowed just one hit over six shutout innings and Ramon Laureano knocked in two runs to lift San Diego to a win over visiting Los Angeles to move back into first place in the National League West.
Cortes (2-2) retired the first 16 men he faced before Miguel Rojas ended his bid for a perfect game with a one-out single to right in the sixth. Cortes fanned three and threw 56 of his 81 pitches for strikes.
Tyler Glasnow (1-2) absorbed the loss, permitting three runs off two hits and four walks in four innings while fanning three. The Padres managed only three hits but drew six walks in the game. The teams combined for just five hits.
Athletics 2, Mariners 1 (10 innings)
Shea Langeliers doubled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning as the Athletics defeated host Seattle.
Tyler Ferguson (3-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the victory and Hogan Harris got the final two outs for his second save, escaping a bases-loaded jam. Randy Arozarena homered in the sixth for the Mariners’ lone run.
In the 10th, Brett Harris’ sacrifice bunt sent automatic runner Colby Thomas to third. An out later, Langeliers lined a hanging breaking pitch from Caleb Ferguson (3-3) into the right field corner to score Thomas with the deciding run.
